In today’s society more and more individuals are getting heartburn from the fast-paced society we live in. Heartburn is that nasty pain in your chest that you get and it just doesn’t seem to go away. There are a lot of over-the-counter medications today that can be taken but you must first know what is the right one for you.

If you already have heartburn these are a few of the common types of antacids, things that you could look for in your local grocery store :

Alka-Seltzer is one of the most common choices that is widely sold today.

Tums is the next choice,another regular over-the-counter drug for antacids.

Pepto-Bismol is another good choice.

Maalox is also a common choice.

Rolaids is yet another choice for you.

See there are tons of other choices out there, but those are just the most common. Some other choices that are out there but are not so common include Amphojel, Alternagel, Gelusil, and Gaviscon. Now just like anything if these fail to relieve the heartburn pain please see a doctor immediately because it could be signs of something more severe and go about treating you in other ways for your symptoms.

Now if any of those over-the-counter medications relieved the pain there are also medications that you can take to reduce the production of acid in the stomache. A few of the most common one’s include : Axid RD, Pepcid AC, Tagamet HB, and Zantac. These are great if you are about to go out to eat or do something that would normally trigger your heatburn. The FDA has also recently approved the usage of Prilosec for over-the-counter sale for frequent heartburn treatment (more then two episodes a week) for a period of 14 days.

All of these medications are for over-the-counter sale but please follow the directions on the box or the directions of a doctor.

Also just like any drug there are side effects which range from confusion, chest tightness, bleeding, sore throat, fever, irregular heartbeat, weakness, and unusual fatigue to less serious side effects which include mild headache, dizziness, and diarrhea. If you start showing any of these side effects please consult with a doctor immediately.

All of these common antacids and antacid blocker’s,to a certain degree, can be effective in stopping your heartburn. If you have been taking any of these and your symptoms persist for longer then a period of two weeks, please seek medical assistance because it could be signs of something more sever that only a prescription by a doctor can cure.
