Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease can be very dreadful so if you think there is a chance you might have it, it is important that you check the disease’s signs and symptoms. You should not take any chances particularly when it comes to health issues. You should immediately see the doctor because GERD can be very dangerous.

Below is description of the common symptoms of GERD. If you often get heartburn and have any of the following symptoms, you should turn off the computer immediately and head to the doctor.

Symptoms:

  • You get heartburn more than twice a week.
  • You get heartburn at night, which affects your daytime activities.
  • You often get chest pain, which is more like a burning, uncomfortable sensation spreading across the chest.
  • You have trouble swallowing food.
  • You often feel like something is stuck in the throat.
  • You have a persistent cough that doesn’t go away with medicine.
  • You frequently get nauseous.
  • You continuously feel the need to swallow extra saliva (a condition known as water brash).
  • You feel your appetite vanishing.
  • Sudden weight loss.
  • You often get diarrhea.
  • You have a sore throat, laryngitis and hoarseness.

The list of symptoms is very long; however, the bottom line is that if you have most of these symptoms, you are most probably under a great health risk. The acid inside your stomach finds its way out and constantly attacks the esophagus, which is not a small issue. There is only one cause behind these symptoms of GERD: Defective Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES).

Esophagus, commonly known as the food pipe, is a muscular tube that extends from the throat area to the stomach. In the surrounding area of the pipe, there is a ring of muscles that joins the stomach and this is known as Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). LES has been designed in the human body to keep the digestive acids away from esophagus because they can injure it. A healthy person without GERD symptoms has stomach acids away from the sphincter. This allows the food to travel through without having the acids to escape upwards. However, when you show symptoms of GERD, your LES becomes defective and the deficiency is increased even by a Hiatal Hernia.

In addition to the defective Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), there are many other factors that cause GERD. You should alter your everyday life pattern and bring some changes in the lifestyle. In addition to that, you should have a sensible diet. There are many types of procedures and medications that can help you minimize the symptoms before the lifestyle changes start showing their work.

For instance, let’s suppose your digestive tract is producing way too much acid. In a situation like this, the doctor might recommend using acid suppressants temporarily. Once your body restores the state of balance, you should stop using these acid suppressants immediately because they can have other dangerous side effects.
