Acid indigestion is a form of indigestion which is caused by an excess amount of stomach acid, although an insufficient amount of stomach acid may also cause acid indigestion. If acid indigestion is a rare occurrence, it is not a significant health issue. If acid indigestion recurs regularly, you should consult a doctor because frequent occurrences of acid indigestion can aggravate the stomach lining and can lead to life threatening ulcers.

Common symptoms of acid indigestion are quite uncomfortable and include constipation, heart burn, a burning sensation in the stomach and general upset stomach. Too much alcohol commonly causes acid indigestion. If you need to drink, try drinking less frequently, drinking in less quantities or water down your drinks. Smoking and drinking too much caffeine is linked to causing acid indigestion, too.

The first remedy of curing or preventing acid indigestion is to have a healthy and balanced diet. Avoid fatty and spicy foods and eat small meals throughout the day. Leaving the stomach empty for too long can cause acidic buildup too, so be sure to eat consistently. Some studies have shown that consuming proteins and complex carbohydrates can cause an acidic build up, so while both are necessary for a healthy diet, it is best to consume meats and carbohydrates at different meals.

Exercising consistently has been shown to prevent acid indigestions. While this wont provide immediate relief, exercise has been shows to help improve your bodies overall digestive system. Individuals in good physical condition also have better digestive systems than those in poor condition.

There are many over the counter drugs available at pharmacies and drug stores which are shown to alleviate the symptoms of acid indigestion. It is important to not form a dependency on any of those drugs as over use can cause other health issues. Other, more natural remedies are available. Many believe that swallowing white vinegar, swallowing a tea spoon of yellow mustard, or eating pickles will reduce the pain associated with acid indigestion. Some natural herbs including meadowsweet, lavender, and mints have been shown to help soothe acid indigestion symptoms.
