The symptoms of acid reflux are easily identifiable once you know what you are looking for. All of the symptoms may not be present in a person suffering from acid reflux all of the time but if the person exhibits two or three acid reflux symptoms on a regular basis for an extended period of time, chances are good that they are suffering from an acute case of acid reflux.

Heartburn
Out of all of the common acid reflux symptoms, heartburn is the easiest to identify. Heartburn occurs when excessive acid in the stomach irritates the lining of the stomach and causes discomfort or a burning pain. In severe cases, the pain of heartburn can extend into the throat. Chronic or frequent cases of heartburn can damage the lining of the stomach and esophagus over time and may require surgical treatment if not managed properly.

Dyspepsia
Many people suffering from acid reflux symptoms will experience dyspepsia, a general term for stomach discomfort. Dyspepsia can take many forms, including a sensation of fullness or bloating, excessive burping or gas production in stomach, and nausea, especially after eating a meal. The severity of dyspepsia will vary from person to person and is dependent on a number of variables

Regurgitation
Regurgitation is often the most frightening of all the acid reflux symptoms. Regurgitation occurs when the acid in the stomach travels backwards up the esophagus into the throat and mouth. The person has the sensation of burping up liquid or slightly vomiting in the back of their mouth and is left with a bitter taste on their tongue. Severe regurgitation can cause the person to vomit violently to expel the excessive acid in their stomach.

Severe Symptoms
While most acid reflux symptoms are not life threatening, the appearance of any alarming symptoms of acid reflux should prompt an examination by a medical professional as soon as possible. These alarming symptoms include difficulty swallowing, wheezing, blood in the vomit, or unusual weight loss. Because these symptoms can be an indication of a serious health issue, it is best to seek medical attention quickly if any of these symptoms are observed.

Acid reflux symptoms can appear at any time, but there are some times when the appearance of these symptoms are more common. The symptoms of acid reflux frequently appear after a heavy or filling meal has been eaten and when the person is lying down on their back. In many cases, the symptoms appear at night when the person is trying to sleep and the symptoms can be much more severe in these cases.

Certain foods and liquids can increase the severity of acid reflux symptoms by adding additional acid to the stomach or increasing the natural acid production in the stomach. The most common culprits include alcohol, acidic drinks such as lemonade or orange juice, spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Avoiding these items can lessen the severity of acid reflux symptoms significantly.
