Although the name can be deceiving, heartburn is actually a condition that involves the upper digestive system, not the heart. Heartburn symptoms are experienced in the chest, which many people mistake for the heart. Heartburn is painful and can even lead to other medical complications if left untreated.

Although there are different factors that trigger heartburn, the symptoms are the same. Most commonly, people will experience a burning sensation in the chest. This feeling usually occurs after eating and can last anywhere from several minutes to several hours.
Heartburn symptoms also include pains in the chest, especially when lying down or bending over. These movements should especially be avoided after eating a meal. To avoid these heartburn symptoms, a patient should not lie down after eating and should instead remain in an upright position.

Some of these foods include creamy soups and sauces, oils, whole milk, caffeinated beverages, chocolate, and fatty and fried foods.
Another type of heartburn symptom is the feeling of food being stuck in the throat or middle of the chest. This feeling can also create difficulties in swallowing and further inflammation. Chronic heartburn symptoms also lead to chronic cough, hoarseness or a sore throat.
Although heartburn symptoms are uncomfortable and painful, the symptoms respond to antacids quickly. Antacids can be purchased in over-the-counter or prescription strengths and the type needed depends on the severity and duration of the heartburn symptoms. Antacids are safe to take for regular heartburn symptoms and can be purchased in pill form or dissolvable tablets.
Because heartburn symptoms are caused by increased stomach acid, antacids help to neutralize the acids by using calcium and carbonates. If over-the-counter antacids do not work for heartburn symptoms, patients can get a prescription strength antacid.
Heartburn symptoms can also be relieved by taking acid blockers, which block the production of stomach acids. Acid blockers and antacids can be taken together, and acid blockers are just as safe to take as antacids. They are available in both over-the-counter and prescription strengths as well.
Heartburn symptoms can also be avoided by eating the right foods. Stick to foods that are fresh and include fruits, vegetables, lean meats, skim milk products, and whole grains. Meals should be eaten more frequently and in smaller portions. Keeping the head elevated while sleeping or resting are other ways to relieve heartburn symptoms. Also be sure to keep stress levels low by doing breathing and relaxation techniques.
