Acid Reflux is also known as Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the liquids in the stomach come back up into the esophagus. For those with acid reflux their body produces more acid (containing bile and pepsin) and it stays in the esophagus longer. This liquid can damage the esophagus causing inflammation.

When suffering from Acid Reflux (Heartburn) there are many food items that you will want to stay away from. Eating these foods has been known triggers. As a rule of thumb, higher in fat content, the worse it is going to make your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) feel. Fried greasy foods are top on the list. French Fried, Fried Chicken and anything deep fried is going to cause an influx of acid.

High fat meats such as bacon will cause problems. It is best to eat it in very small amount, get it as lean as possible and blot off the grease. When preparing other meats be sure to trim all visible fat before cooking.

Condiments such as butter, margarine and mayonnaise should be substituted for butter spray or a low fat variety of butter, margarine and mayonnaise. The lower the fact content the better it will be to ease the acid reflux.

Creamy sauces such as those put on pasta as well as creamy high fat salad dressing should be avoided. Opt for lower calorie lower fat versions. Coincidently whole fat milk should be avoided too. Opt for a skim or fat free variety. If that is not tasteful try 2%.

Another food to stay away from when you suffer from acid reflux is chocolate. To add insult to injury another popular candy, peppermint is also on the no-no list.

Caffeinated beverages should be avoided at all costs. This includes coffee, tea, energy drinks and sodas. Sodas should be avoided anyway as acid reflux will react to the carbonation (bubbles). Alcohol should also be avoided.

Spicy foods and black pepper should not be consumed if you are trying to ease acid reflux flair ups. Anything with too much spice makes the stomach very acidic.

Citrus fruits and juices (including tomato) also contain high levels of acid and will only add to your acid reflux.

Although it may seem like there is nothing left to eat after reading that list there are some things you can eat such as egg whites, egg substituted, whole grains, apples, bananas, potato, green beans, baked potato chips and jelly beans.

Everyone is different so it is best to keep a food diary to see what triggers your acid reflux.
