There are many causes for acid reflux. By determining what is causing your acid reflux you can help to prevent it from happening. Some of the most common causes for acid reflux include: caffeine, chocolate, fried/fatty foods, tomatoes/tomato-based products, alcohol, tobacco, large meals, Citrus fruits/juice, eating too close to bedtime, and tight-fitting clothing. However, you may be wondering how these can lead to acid reflux.

Some foods and products like caffeine, chocolate, tomato based products, alcohol, and citris fruits relax the LES(Lower Esophageal Sphincter). Which leads to acid from the stomach being allowed to return to the esophagus. The acid in the esophagus is what leads to the burning and pain associated with acid reflux.

Fried and fatty foods cause acid reflux because they slow down digestion, leaving food in the stomach longer. This increased time in the stomach can lead to pressure in the stomach that causes the already weakened LES to release acid back into the esophagus.

Some causes for acid reflux have nothing to do with food, but more to do with chemicals that are introduced into the body. Smoking can cause acid reflux. Smoking tobacco actually weakens the LES because the chemicals pass from the esophagus, into the lungs, and then into the blood.

Some other popular causes for acid reflux are eating large meals, sleeping too soon after eating, and wearing tight fitting clothing. Eating large meals can cause additional pressure on the stomach, which in turn puts pressure on the LES, which then allows acid to gurgle back up into the esophagus. If you go to sleep too soon after eating a meal, this can also cause acid reflux. When you go to sleep on a full stomach, added pressure will be put on your abdomen. This causes pressure to build up and weaken your LES, eventually causing acid reflux. Finally, wearing tight fitting clothing can also put added pressure on the abdomen. Often, tight clothes will press on the abdomen, causing pressure on your LES which leads to acid reflux. Some of the popular clothing culprits are belts and slenderizing garments.

While there are many causes for acid reflux, the afformentioned causes are the most popular. Fortunately, if your acid reflux is caused by one or more of these stressors, you can easily prevent it by removing the stressor. However, if you have removed these acid reflux triggers from your daily life and are still experiencing problems, it may be time to visit your doctor. Often, doctors may prescribe medications that can lower the amount of acid in your system, thereby lowering your body’s ability to splash acid back into the esophagus.
