Stay away from coffee and other beverages that are high in caffeine. You should stay away from foods that have a lot of acid, such as tomato-based sauces or salsas. Since citric acid can cause irritation, stay away from foods like oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes. Sometimes, fresh tomatoes can be bad, as well. You should drink a lot of water and keep your head and shoulders elevated while you sleep. Consuming broccoli can actually help settle your stomach, and even plain mashed potatoes can soothe your stomach too.

Answer: Coffee, chocolate, mint, and any foods that are greasy or fatty are all things that commonly make this condition worse. Spicy foods like those containing garlic, hot Mexican food, etc., are the culprits for some. Another really big trigger can be citrus, even the small amount squeezed into a glass of iced tea. Some experimentation is needed to figure out what triggers it for you. I get relief by drinking milk and eating some sort of carbohydrate, like saltines or graham crackers. I take some Gaviscon if that fails.
