Question: I wondered if the medication would actually eliminate the problem with spitting up or if it would only relieve the pain.  My doctor said it would not stop the spitting up.  It would stop the pain.

Answer: Consider what happens when you take a medication for heartburn or acid reflux. The pain is reduced. It has helped my nausea also. This medication will help relieve the pain and reduce instances of spitting-up. It will involve trying one thing and then another. Best wishes that your baby gets well soon.

Answer: My little boy was 6 or 7 months old when I tried him on a few medicines. His acid reflux was so uncomfortable. The medicines did not assist with vomiting, however I believe they assisted with the pain involved. He ate better because he felt better. Getting him to take his medicines was really hard because he didn’t like taking them. After awhile, I just threw my hands in the air and took him off of all medications.  When two months had passed, his symptoms had resolved on their own. When he became able to move around independently, the problem resolved itself. Since then he has been doing well!

Additionally, we saw a GI specialist regarding his reflux. The doctor told us that our little boy has an esophageal weakness. The weakness was at the point at which the esophagus connects with the stomach. In some babies, this area is just not mature right from birth. Our general practitioner told us that we might try medications, but that he would probably grow out of it after a while.  We tried the medications, and eventually, he grew out of it. Your baby might have the same situation. Medicine isn’t needed if there are no issues with weight gain or growth. But give them a try. They might be helpful. We didn’t get much help from them.

Answer: My daughter, Bella, has a type of reflux known as moderate silent reflux.  With this condition, food may come up, but she does not throw it up.  Also, it is difficult for her to swallow. Doctors usually prescribe medications such as Losec. These relieve the burning sensation; however, they do not resolve the problem.

We have had good luck with a dose of Karicare Thickener fed as a thin gel prior to each feeding.  This helps her keep her food down.

Answer: I have a five-year-old baby brother. He had acid reflux disease when he was an infant. Because of this, we were given medication. Medicine may cure the symptoms, but it does not solve the problem. It is ongoing for him.

Answer: The acid flowing back up causes the pain. It causes wounds to the esophagus. The pain will end if you can bring a halt to the spitting up.

Answer: Speak with your health care professional.

The reflux could be a serious symptom due to a health problem.
