Question: I have fun every now and then going to parties with friends and relatives but I have GERD… Is there something that I can do to lessen the terrible pain and discomfort I feel the following day? Some relief would be good.
Answer: Use Aciphex, Protonix, Prilosec, Prevacid, Axid, or another type of proton pump inhibitor. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes before drinking. Drink water in the middle.
Answer: Eat foods that contain starch when you drink (such as bread or crackers). As you are aware, alcohol is not too good for your esophagus.
Answer: Alright, I am fifteen years old and more intelligent than you are. I am afflicted with GERD/Acid Reflux Disease. Don’t drink, since this will cause worse problems. However if you must drink, eat a slice of bread before you drink. This will help keep the acid inside your stomach and it won’t move into the esophagus. Also you could begin to use Prilosec OTC or visit the doctor to get a Prevacid prescription. This is what I use. Avoid foods that are oily, full of salt, spices, and fried. Also you can use Tums every few hours – they line your esophagus and so you won’t have acid; milk helps in the exact way, so you can have milk before you go to sleep to line your esophagus. I can’t actually drink milk because I can’t tolerate lactose, but you can eat bread before you go to sleep and this will be beneficial also.
Answer: Your body is saying to you don’t drink alcohol. If you decide to do it however, drink a whole cup of water every time you drink. You will have more fun anyway.
Answer: Use 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, combined with 8 ounces of water; drink it, and you are treated. Don’t let it become a custom, since it is very salty.
Answer: Don’t drink. Be certain it is GERD. Tagamet or prevacid would be beneficial; request that your doctor consider it.
