Question: This past Monday my chest began to hurt. So my mother took me to have it checked out. An EKG was done and nothing was found; they also found nothing in the blood work. I kept thinking about it and it worsened between Tuesday and Friday. (I am already under treatment for anxiety.) I believed I was experiencing a heart attack. I mean, I was not in terrible pain, but I was frightened because my father had a heart attack and died when he was 43 (although he was a heavy smoker). On Friday, I still was not feeling well; in fact, I felt even worse because I kept thinking about it. We dialed 911 and they came right away. Two EKG’s and two blood tests were done; all the results were normal. I should also say that during the past few months I have experienced frequent indigestion. A GI doctor came in and he is almost certain that it is GERD since this can result in pain and I was not aware of this. He gave me a prescription for Nexium. To ease my mind, I am visiting a heart doctor tomorrow. Is it possible that these are GERD symptoms? There is discomfort in the breastbone on the left side and occasionally the right side.
Answer: It is very possible that it is GERD. Could possibly be fretfulness? If it happens every now and then, specifically while you breathe, this might be pleurisy, asthma, or some other type of respiratory trouble.
But it was wise to have an EKG and blood tests. While it is quite rare for heart attacks to occur in a 17-year-old, it can happen.
Answer: If GERD is causing the symptoms, Nexium should alleviate them within a couple of days. Determine whether the pain is worse after you eat or at night. GERD is usually worse at night.
Answer: I want to help you, but I have the exact problem that you do, except for being anxious. I think it began when I was 17 years old too, about 2 years ago. But I have not consulted with a physician about it. I hope there will be a solution for the two of us. It is horrible; feeling like someone is cutting my chest.
Answer: Your description of symptoms leads me to believe that it could be GERD. You don’t have to be concerned about your heart. Anxiety can cause GERD symptoms and people frequently think the pain has to do with their heart. The Nexium will be of assistance. If it is not helpful, ask your physician to prescribe Zoton (lansoprazole), which is a drug in the same class that is more effective.
