Question: I have heard that the best thing to do is to have small sips of a drink while eating and wait about a half hour after eating to drink additional fluids. The reasoning is that if too much fluid is consumed while eating, the food is more likely to float around in the stomach, enabling it to come up more easily and cause acid reflux/heartburn. Is this a fact?

Answer: Ummm…. I don’t know. I cannot believe that water is not good for people…

Answer: I would be interested in hearing the response to that question. Normally if you drink too much liquid during a meal, it is an indication that you are not spending enough time chewing your food to enable efficient digestion. Not a good thing, but not usually related to acid reflux. While drinking too much water can cause various issues by decreasing the concentration of electrolytes, it does not cause acid reflux. Acid reflux is most often caused by eating fatty or spicy foods, especially late at night.

Answer: I doubt that this would be problematic unless you consume a large quantity of alcohol or other fluids. Part of the problem is the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach. Its function is to keep the food, acid and other materials in the stomach, not allowing them to travel back into the esophagus. Eating too quickly can damage the sphincter or cause other problems, particularly over a period of time. When that material begins reversing its course, it causes erosion of the esophagus and can even make its way so far back up the esophagus that you can taste it… yuck. Do everything in moderation… You may drink as much as you want… just do not drink too much at one time. That simply makes sense, do you not agree?

Answer: Visit webmd.com or ask your physician, but normally GERD is only precipitated by consuming spicy foods.
