Question: Being 6 months pregnant, I have heartburn every night, whether my stomach is full or empty. I did take Tums for awhile but stopped because I was using so much. Can someone suggest a home remedy? I thank you for any advice! Thank you!

Answer:
It happened to me also, at the same stage of my pregnancy. The heartburn made my life very difficult. Two Tums after a meal worked somewhat for me. I found that ice cream worked! Indulging in a bowl before bedtime helped me tremendously. I proved the old wives’ tale that heartburn during pregnancy causes a full head of hair on the baby.

Answer: Don’t add to your troubles with the wrong advice. Maybe someone has suggested to you that milk or mints will cure heartburn. The man giving you this advice will also sell you a piece of swamp land. Do you mean that milk and mints won’t work? One of lots of foods that assist in relaxing your stomach are mints, as they help the esophageal sphincter (which protects you from eating too much) keep acid in your stomach.

Answer: Milk isn’t a good choice? The problem is that the fats, proteins and calcium in milk cause acid secretion in the stomach. You may hear that milk is good for your heartburn but don’t believe it.

Answer: Dr. Klein says that it may feel soothing going down but also causes acid in the stomach.  A safe alternative during pregnancy is Tums. Their use was recommended by my doctor.

Answer: When I was carrying my baby my acid reflux was so horrible I’d vomit. My mother suggested I get baking soda and mix it with cold water to alleviate my heartburn. That might work for you, as it kept mine away all day. I purchase fresh pineapple whenever I have indigestion or heartburn now. Fresh is best – just cut and eat. I find that it always works. I’m not sure what ingredients help but it does in a matter of minutes, and keeps the heartburn away.

Answer: Currently, I take Tums when it gets really bad.

Answer: I simply drink a glass of warm milk.

This remedy should work; it does for me, although the milk must be warm.

Answer: I’ve found that avoiding foods that cause heartburn and drinking a glass of milk really helps me. Although Tums provide short-term relief, it does not last for very long.

Answer: Regular milk will work but not chocolate as chocolate will induce heartburn.
