Gastroesophageal or GERD is a condition in which partially digested food and acid backs up from the stomach into the throat and esophagus. This can be an extremely painful, life altering condition that mimics the symptoms of a heart attack. Therefore, prompt treatment is a necessity. GERD is traditionally treated with prescription medications, namely Kapidex.

Dexlansoprazole (Kapidex) is a prescription drug that is used to treat heartburn, to heal erosive esophagitis which is damage caused to the esophagus by stomach acid, and other more serious forms of acid reflux disease. Although it may be used to treat other medical conditions, these are the primary reasons a person will take Kapidex. Kapidex works by turning off the pumps in the stomach that produces acid, thereby decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. In addition to decreasing the amount of stomach acid produced, usually within an hour of taking the medication, Kapidex then releases a second dose of medicine 4 – 5 hours later. This patented, dual delayed release formula provides lasting relief.

Typically this medication is taken regularly for 4 weeks, at which time many users have reported a dramatic decrease in symptoms if not a complete elimination of them. For more serious cases, the medication can be taken for up to several months. The pill should never be crushed but swallowed whole with a full 8 ounce glass of water. It may or may not be taken with food. If you are unable to swallow Kapidex, talk with your doctor about other methods of taking this medication. It can be taken by opening the capsule and mixing it with one spoonful of applesauce. However, this can be especially dangerous because the pill is designed to slowly release medicine into the body. Breaking open this capsule can result in too much medicine entering the body too quickly.

Despite how great this medication is at treating GERD, there are certain risks associated with it and there are certain people who should not take this medication. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to any of the ingredients in Kapidex, or suffer from liver disease then you should refrain from taking Kapidex. Furthermore, if you are currently taking certain medications such as blood thinners, iron supplements, Plavix, Omnipen, Reyataz, Lanoxin, or Nizoral, you shouldn’t take Kapidex as they can interact with one another and cause unwanted side effects.

There are also certain side effects that are attributed to this drug. They include:
~ Hives
~ Difficulty breathing
~ Chest Pain
~ Fast or pounding heartbeats
~ Swelling in the lips, tongue, face, and/or throat
~ Severe stomach pain
~ Worsening heartburn
~ Nausea
~ Vomiting
~ Gas
~ Stomach pain
~ Diarrhea
~ Stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing and other general cold and flu symptoms
Some of these side effects are similar to those associated with a heart attack. It is imperative to seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these side effects.

Overall, Kapidex is a breakthrough drug to treat many types of acid reflux disease. Just remember to talk to your doctor before beginning any new medications and to take it exactly as prescribed.
