Cimetidine is medication prescribed for the treatment and prevention of ulcers located in the stomach and small intestine, as well as for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is commonly referred to as GERD. It can also be used to treat esophagitis, a term for the inflammation of the esophagus that is caused by acid reflux or medical conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Cimetidine may also be prescribed for the treatment of other medical conditions as deemed appropriate by your health care provider.

Cimetidine is an H2 antagonist that blocks histamine, a chemical that triggers the release of acid in the stomach. By blocking the acid secretion, the acidity level is reduced in the stomach, thereby lowering the potential for ulceration.

You SHOULD NOT use Cimetidine if you are:

  • allergic to any of the ingredients contained in Cimetidine.
  • currently taking nitrosoureas, which are chemotherapy agents used in cancer treatment, such as carmustine, lomustine, or semustine.
  • currently taking Cisapride or Dofetilide.

Some medical conditions may be adversely affected by Cimetidine. As with any medication, before using Cimetidine, you should discuss potential adverse reactions and drug interactions with your health care provider or pharmacist. This is especially true if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or any dietary supplements.
  • You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances.
  • You have liver or kidney problems.

As with any drug, Cimetidine may interact with other prescription and over the counter medications. Prior to taking Cimetidine, please tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medication, especially prescription medicines used in the treatment of angina, asthma, arrhythmias, blood thinning, cancer, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, infections, pain, psychiatric disorders, or seizures. Medications to treat these disorders may interact with Cimetidine, increasing the risk of side effects, some of which may be potentially life-threatening.

This may not be a complete list of drug interactions that could occur with Cimetidine. Always discuss any changes in medication with your health care provider. This includes stopping, starting, or changing the dose of any medication.
