Carafate is medication used to treat an active duodenal ulcer. It cannot help prevent ulcers from happening. It is not absorbed into the body through the digestive tract; it works mainly in the lining of the stomach by protecting it from acids, enzymes, and bile salts. Carafate can also be used for other purposes; however its main purpose is strictly for ulcers.
Before taking this medication, be sure to let your doctor know if you have kidney disease, or if you are on dialysis- you may need dose adjustments or even special tests in order to safely take Carafate medication. Always take Carafate on an empty stomach. It is best to take it at least one or two hours before a meal. Do not stop taking Carafate before the full prescribed time, as the ulcer may not have healed before then. Do not take any other medications at the same time that you are taking this medication. As with food, take any other medications at least one or two hours before taking Carafate.
Try not to use antacids without your doctor’s advice. Use only the specific type of antacids that your doctor recommends to you. Antacids contain different opposing medicines and may slow down Carafate, making it harder to work in your stomach. When taking an antacid that your doctor does recommend, take it at least thirty minutes before taking Carafate.
Although this medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are planning to become pregnant soon while taking Carafate. It is unclear as to whether or not this medication is harmful to a nursing baby or if this medication passes into nursing milk. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor that you are nursing a child.
