Axid, or nizatidine, is an H2 antagonist that works in the body by blocking histamine, a chemical that stimulates the production of stomach acid. Axid is generally prescribed to treat and prevent acute duodenal ulcers, and is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis. Axid is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly called GERD.
Axid, like all prescription medications, should not be used in the event of known allergies to nizatidine or any of its ingredients, or any other H2 antagonist.
Axid should not be used in individuals with certain prexisting conditions without prior approval from a physician. If you have one of the following conditions, consult your physician or pharmacist before using Axid:
-If you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or are breast feeding
-If you are taking any other prescription medication, any nonprescription medication, herbal preparation or dietary supplement
-If you have any allergies to other medications
-If you have kidney or liver problems
-If you have a history of the blood disease porphyria
Some medications may interfere with the absorption of Axid. Therefore, inform your physician of all medications you are taking before beginning therapy with Axid. In particular, you should tell your doctor if you are taking ketoconazole, as the effectiveness of ketoconazole therapy may be reduced with concommitant use of Axid. It is also important to consult your physician before modifying dosage of any medication.
The dosage of Axid (nizatidine) varies depending on the disease state.
Initial dosage for acute duodenal ulcer is 300mg per day. This dosage may be split into two dosages of 150 mg if needed.
Maintenance dosage for duodenal ulcer is 150 mg per day.
*In patients with decreased creatinine clearance, or other conditions where clearance by the kidney is decreased, the dosage of Axid may need to be adjusted.
*In patients with decreased liver function, the dosage of Axid may need to be decreased.
*In patients younger than 18 years of age, the dosage is based on the weight of the child.
While side effects seen by patients using Axid have usually been mild and transient, some side effects have been noted. They include sleepiness, fatigue or sweating.
*Notify your physician in the event that you develop rapid or pulsating heartbeat, diarrhea, pale stools, mental confusion, easy bruising or vision changes. It is also important to notify your physician if you exhibit signs of an allergic reaction, including rash, skin discoloration or difficulty breathing.
