What is it?
Hyperacidity is a dietary disorder. In simple terms, it is caused when a person eats too much without keeping a check on his health. It is also called heartburn. Excessive acid secretion occurs when you suffer from this condition. When you consume food, your stomach produces hydrochloric acid to digest it. When you eat in large amounts, the stomach fills up with more and more hydrochloric acid and thus, you experience hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia.
What causes hyperacidity?
Stomach cancer and acid reflux disorders can contribute to hyperacidity in people. Eating lots of oily or fatty foods, high consumption of alcohol, smoking and uncontrolled intake of caffeinated products like coffee are also some of the causes behind hyperacidity. If you have been diagnosed with a medical problem related to your stomach, gallbladder or the intestines, you are more prone to suffering from the symptoms of hyperacidity.
Signs and Symptoms
Pain in the stomach is the most common sign of hyperacidity. You can also experience nausea, vomiting, stiff stomach, constipation, indigestion and restlessness after eating. Sometimes when you belch, the taste of the food remains in your mouth. This is a very common sign of hyperacidity.
What problems does it cause?
Hyperacidity can lead to ulcers or chronic gastritis in most people. These conditions have all the symptoms of hyperacidity. Make sure to get yourself checked if the problem persists. You might be falling ill with a serious disease without even realizing it.
How can it be diagnosed?
When a person suffers from this condition, a gradual pain starts in his chest. The pain is located just beneath the lower ribs at the right side of your heart. It usually occurs once you have eaten too much. Home remedies like tasting a lemon or taking a pinch of salt are always helpful. If nothing is done and the person does not vomit either, the pain stays there.
How can it be treated at home?
Rest your body. If you go to a gym regularly, try avoiding it for a few days. Change your diet plan. Include healthy foods and stick to the new plan. If you are above 40 years of age, you really need to watch what you eat. A minor indulgence can sometimes cause a big medical problem. Moreover, once you start going to the gym again, encourage your fellows to eat healthy and stay healthy. It is easier to follow a new eating pattern if your friends are doing it as well.
How can it be treated otherwise?
You can take antacids to control its effects but consult a doctor before doing so. Hyperacidity can turn into a serious medical condition called heamatemesis. This condition involves vomits of blood. If you are not careful with your recurring problem of hyperacidity, heamatemesis is imminent. It can be treated by medication. Moreover, stomach ulcers can get out of control and require surgery.
How to prevent it?
Stay tension-free while you eat. Stay away from fatty foods. Stick to your diet. Exercise regularly to burn calories on a daily basis. Quit smoking and reduce intake of alcohol to prevent problems in future.
